Canyon Oak Energy’s leadership team has over 150 years of combined experience in the oil and gas industry, with primary responsibilities spanning drilling operations, exploration and production, oil services, and finance.
President and CEO
Graham Brander is the President and CEO of Canyon Oak Energy. He was previously Director of Worldwide Drilling at Apache Corporation, where he initiated the program to develop the next generation land rig technology using drilling automation. Additionally, Mr. Brander had oversight for all of Apache’s worldwide drilling operations and built a global team to manage new venture projects across four continents. Prior to that, he held various management positions with Shell International E&P, including leading the Deepwater Well Engineering Team. In this role, he managed Shell’s global deep water drilling engineering activities in a portfolio valued in excess of $4bn. In the late 1990s, he was an original member of the global “Drilling the Limit™” initiative that delivered significant well delivery value creation for Shell. Mr. Brander has also held several positions of increasing responsibility with Unocal and Loffland Brothers, the drilling contractor. He is a member of the SPE and IADC, and has been involved in several committees for both organizations. Mr. Brander received a BSc. in Civil and Structural Engineering from Edinburgh University and an M.B.A. from Rice University.
Rick Rutherford is the COO of Canyon Oak Energy. He was a co-founder of Horizon Drilling, where he was President and CEO from 2004 to 2009. At Horizon, Mr. Rutherford built a fleet of rigs, all with top drives and automation, before the company became a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Energy Services in 2010. Prior to Horizon, Mr. Rutherford was a co-founder of H&R Drilling, where as President, he grew the company into Canada’s third largest drilling and service rig contractor in 5 years. H&R was acquired by Nabors Industries in 2002. Mr. Rutherford’s career has spanned over 48 years in the oil and gas drilling and service sector, from working on the rig floor to ownership of his own companies. He has spent the last 25 years building equipment and companies to meet the ongoing changes and demands of the oil and gas industry.
Daniel Kim is the CFO of Canyon Oak Energy. Prior to joining Canyon Oak Energy, Mr. Kim led corporate finance teams responsible for capital raises and M&A transactions at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities, Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley. Additionally, he held various management positions at Exxon in operations, project management, technology implementation and business planning. Throughout his 25 years of experience in the energy industry, Mr. Kim served in various operations and financial roles. He also currently serves on the Advisory Board of Girvan Partners, a private investment and strategic advisory firm. He is a member of the SPE and IADC. Mr. Kim received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Yale University.
Executive Vice President Operations & Engineering
Lance Spencer is the Executive Vice President of Operations and Engineering of Canyon Oak Energy. Prior to joining Canyon Oak Energy, Mr. Spencer was Program Manager at Apache Corporation, where he managed the next generation rig project. Additionally, he has held various management positions within BP for 15 years, including being Global Drilling & Completions Advisor and Senior Well Site Leader of North American Gas, where he led the deployment of horizontal drilling technology while supervising drilling operations in the Woodford and Eagleford. He also held positions of various capacities for Halliburton and PCIEG. Mr. Spencer received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Tulsa and Advanced Studies in Industrial Engineering from Oklahoma State University.
Executive Vice President Business Development
Bill Henn is the Executive Vice President of Business Development of Canyon Oak Energy. Prior to joining Canyon Oak Energy, Mr. Henn was an Account Vice President at Halliburton, where he was responsible for developing and growing the global accounts of multiple major North American independent oil and gas companies. Additionally, he held various senior business development management positions at Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), Baroid Drilling Fluids, and Sperry-Sun Drilling Services. Throughout his 26 plus years of experience in the energy industry, Mr. Henn has a history of creating value through his business development activities, leading to organizational growth. He is third-generation oil and gas, growing up in central Kansas, and currently residing in Houston, Texas. Mr. Henn received his B.S. in Engineering Technology from Kansas State University, and is a member of the IADC, SPE, AADE, and API.
